Creating Custom vs. Shopping Racks of Ready-to-Wear

When choosing to create custom, it boils down to having control versus settling for something you somewhat like off the rack. Most people don't realize all the choices you have when you create your own wardrobe.

You are taking control of your style instead of letting a professional retail buyer choose for you. Buyers must purchase for a mass audience. You are thinking and creating solely for you.

  • The sales clerk will not likely know anything more than the brand name and the price.

  • You don't have to settle for something where you might like the fabric but not the styling of the garment, the fit, the lining, etc.

  • Then, you are forced to spend money to have the garment altered to fit by (hopefully) a competent tailor.

Quality custom starts with the fit, first and foremost. Even if you want to order multiples of a garment the first day, we will ask you to let us order one piece upfront to ensure you are pleased with the fit. Whether it's a suit, shirt, slacks, or a custom t-shirt, we want the fit to be as precise as possible before you're off to the races.

  1. At b.Kreps&Co., we work as a team with you to take measurements. You are an integral part of that process by giving us feedback so we can ensure the finished garment looks and feels the way your personal style demands.

  2. Then, the fun begins as we put you to work choosing from thousands of fabrics from the best mills in the world. We help you narrow down your choices with lots of questions. What purpose will the garment serve you? What is the environment in which you will wear the look? How often will you wear it? What is your budget?

    • Then, we will review the fabric mills and qualities that we feel will fit your needs best and help you narrow your choices to a manageable number. No need to be overwhelmed. We want to keep it fun. Rest assured, we will find something that excites you.

  3. Once the fabric is chosen, then we move on to styling. We can show examples of jackets/suits here, but many of the same options apply to shirts, outerwear, denim, etc. You will be surprised and pleased with all the looks you can create. And if you want to change the look completely for the next garment, that's the world of custom.

    • If you have a look in mind, we will work from that, especially if it's a tuxedo for your wedding or a special event.

      1. Lapels come in many shapes and sizes, and we have examples of almost all of these.

      2. The variety of jacket pocket styles has grown tremendously; we show you your choices.

      3. Buttons are an essential part of the details of any garment and aren't relegated to just brown or black. Upward of 50 looks are available to accent and individualize your fabric choice.

      4. We have hundreds of lining choices. This sometimes becomes the longest part of the styling process. It's fun to have the lining show your personality.

      5. If you want all your buttonholes in an accent color, we can do that, or if you wish to have the one button on your sleeve in color, we can do that also. You won't see that on the rack at a ready-to-wear store.

    • Trousers offer many styles in waistbands with or without belt loops. More comfortable fitting legs with various pleats and cuffs are standard fair. Even drawstring waistbands and cargo pockets.

    • Shirts have more choices in collars and cuffs than ever, plus an extensive choice in buttons and threads.

  4. Custom jeans, outerwear, footwear, knits, and the list goes on and on. All with the fit and look you choose that shows your individuality and style.

To summarize:
Fit and quality first.
It's all about you.
The choices are vast.
We make it fun by providing a relaxed environment and expert guidance.
